About the trek

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a truly wild and remote adventure in the far eastern corner of Nepal. It is one of the most untouched trails in the Himalayas, taking you entirely around the world's third-highest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). This trek offers a brilliant mix of deep, tropical jungles, thick rhododendron forests, giant glaciers, and rugged high-altitude passes. The ultimate highlight is the rare chance to stand at both the North Base Camp (Pangpema) and the South Base Camp (Oktang). Because it is an off-the-beaten-path route, trekkers get to enjoy quiet trails, rare wildlife, and the deeply authentic cultures of local Rai, Limbu, and Tibetan-influenced villages.

Transfer to Hotel in Kathmandu.
Early morning transfer from your hotel to Kathmandu domestic airport. Take a scenic 45-minute flight to Bhadrapur, enjoying aerial views of Nepal’s diverse landscapes. Upon arrival, continue by jeep toward Taplejung, passing through Birtamod, Ilam, Jorpokhari, and Amarpur. As the road climbs, the air becomes cooler, marking the beginning of your Kanchenjunga adventure.
After breakfast, drive from Taplejung to Sekathum along narrow mountain roads. The route passes lush forests, traditional settlements, and follows the Tamor River. Permits are checked at the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area checkpoint before reaching Sekathum.
Begin trekking after breakfast. The trail follows Ghunsa Khola and Thotane Khola, passing through rhododendron forests, rocky paths, and suspension bridges. A mix of ascents and descents makes today adventurous.
Trek through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, rich in flora and fauna. Cross suspension bridges over the Ghunsa River and keep an eye out for red pandas. Reach the Tibetan-style village of Gyabla (Kyapra).
Walk through rhododendron and oak forests with waterfalls and mountain views. Pass Phale village, known for its carpet factory, before reaching Ghunsa, the cultural center of the region.
Rest and acclimatize at Ghunsa. Optional hikes to nearby ridges for views of Mt. Jannu (Kumbhakarna Peak). Explore local monasteries and learn about Tibetan culture and traditions.
Trek north along Ghunsa Khola through pine and rhododendron forests. Enjoy views of Mt. Jannu, Temachungi, Pholesobi Thongje, and surrounding peaks. Pass mani walls and chortens before reaching Khambachen.
Optional acclimatization hike to Jannu (Faktanglung) Viewpoint, a sacred site for the Kirat community. Enjoy close-up views of Mt. Jannu, glaciers, and surrounding peaks. Return to Khambachen
Follow the Ghunsa Khola through alpine terrain and moraines. Pass Ramtang village and monastery, with views of Ramdang, Mera, and Kanchenjunga glaciers.
Early morning trek to Pangpema, the North Base Camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Enjoy panoramic views of Kanchenjunga, Kirat Chuli, Nepal Chuli, Ramtang Peak, and surrounding glaciers. Return to Lhonak.
Descend via the same trail through Ramtang and Khambachen, returning to Ghunsa.
Turn southward out of Ghunsa, climbing a steep, isolated trail through mossy pine woods up to the basic high shelter at Sele Le.
The hardest day on the circuit. Cross multiple high, exposed passes. On a clear day, you can view Makalu and the Everest giants in the distance. Descend sharply into the southern valley at Cheram.
Walk along the lateral moraine of the Yalung Glacier to the Oktang Viewpoint, looking directly up at the frozen south wall and icefalls of Kanchenjunga before tracing your steps back to Cheram
Drop fast into dense vegetation alongside the river, followed by a final, sharp grunt over the Lasiya Bhanjyang pass before a long descent into the multi-ethnic village of Yamphudin.
The final day on your feet. Follow paths through sub-tropical valleys, cardamom fields, and terraced farmlands until you reach the dirt roadhead at Khamdime.
A long, bumpy jeep journey back down through the rolling eastern hills to the flat Terai plains, checking into a comfortable hotel in Bhadrapur.
Catch the morning flight back to the capital. The trek is officially complete.

One government-certified and experienced English-speaking local guide for the entire trip.
One porter shared between two clients to carry your main backpack (weight limit: 10 kg per trekker).
An assistant guide will be provided if the group size exceeds six participants.
