Mera Peak Climbing

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to hotel.

Early morning (2 am) drive to Ramachhap (4 hours), followed by a short flight to Lukla (2,840m), the gateway to the Everest region. The flight offers breathtaking views of snow-covered peaks as you approach the Himalayas.

As you reach the top of the pass, you’re greeted with sweeping views of the Dudh Kunda region, and on clear days, distant glimpses of Kongde Ri, Karyolung, and Numbur Himal.

Trek gradually descends through pine and rhododendron forests alongside the Hinku River, offering a refreshing change of scenery after high alpine pastures.

The trail ascends steadily through alpine meadows and moraine fields dotted with prayer flags and yak pastures. You will pass the historic, 200-year-old Lungsumgba Gompa, a small Buddhist shrine built into a rock cave where climbers often pause to burn incense for good luck. The day ends at Thangnak.

The trail leads into higher altitude zones with sparse vegetation and stunning views of Mera Peak’s massive north face. Khare is the official base camp for Mera Peak, and from your teahouse window, you see stunning view of Mera Peak’s massive north face and glaciers.

Optional hike from Khare up to High Camp at 5,760m — a steep climb to the glacier camp that helps your body adjust to the thin air.

A full day dedicated entirely to mental and physical preparation. Your guides will do a final inspection of all personal and group climbing gear. The afternoon is spent packing your summit bag, keeping only the bare essentials for the cold high-altitude camp. Rest your legs, stay warm inside the lodge, and focus on eating well and drinking plenty of fluids before moving onto the glacier tomorrow.

The real mountaineering adventure begins. Leaving Khare, you climb a steep rock ridge to reach the edge of the glacier. Here, you strap on your crampons and rope up with your team. The route climbs steadily up the snowy, non-technical glacier slopes, moving past the Mera La pass. The trail then snakes around a rocky outcrop to reach Mera High Camp (5,700m), which is safely perched on a narrow rocky shelf. The view from this camp is legendary, sighting Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. You will spend the evening melted into heavy down layers, eating camp-cooked food, and sleeping in high-altitude tents.

The big day. Wake up around 1:00 AM to a freezing mountain environment. After hot tea and a quick bite, you leave camp by 2:00 AM, using headlamps to light the snow trail. The climb up the open glacier is a long, slow, rhythmic slog against the high altitude and freezing winds. The final 30 meters to the summit involves a steep snow dome climb (around 40-50 degrees) where you will use a fixed rope and ascender for safety. From the top, witness a beautiful 360° view of five of the highest peaks on Earth: Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kangchenjunga. After some time at the top, carefully step down to High Camp for hot soup, pack up the tents, and continue the descent all the way back down to the safety and to Khare.

With the summit successfully completed, the heavy pressure is off. You start your return journey by retracing your steps back down the Hinku Valley. The path passes through the familiar moraines of Thangnak, wandering past old yak pastures and open alpine rivers. As you get closer to Kothe, you cross back below the tree line.

The ascent is gradual but steady, making it a great day to enjoy the changing scenery without the intensity of summit days. Because your body is now highly acclimatized and adapted from the 6,654m summit, this uphill walk will feel noticeably easier than the first few days of the trek.

Your last official day on the trail. You start with a final climb to cross over the Zatrwa La Pass (4,610m) one last time. After saying a final goodbye to the views of the Hinku Valley, you begin a long, continuous, steep downhill trek.

Catch an early morning flight from Lukla back to the Ramechhap, taking in your last aerial views of the high snowy ranges. Upon landing in Ramechhap, a private vehicle will be waiting to drive you back along the riverside highways to your hotel in Kathmandu. The rest of the afternoon is open for a long-awaited hot shower, massage, or shopping.

This is a vital buffer day built into the schedule to protect your international flight home. Mountain weather in Lukla is notoriously unpredictable, and flights can frequently be delayed or grounded due to sudden cloud cover or high winds. If your flight on Day 15 was delayed, this day acts as your safety net. If you arrived on time, this day is yours to enjoy a relaxed tour of Kathmandu's world heritage sites like Boudhanath Stupa or Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Your grand Himalayan expedition is officially complete. After breakfast at the hotel, check out and meet our representative, who will transfer you directly to Tribhuvan International Airport in time for your international departure flight back home.
